Chronic kidney disease is a long term condition in which the kidneys are not functioning well to support the body as they are required to. Eventually if left untreated, it progresses to chronic renal failure. It is a common health disorder that remains fatal if the right treatment is not initiated at the right time.
As the kidney function goes unwell, hazardous levels of fluid and waste may accumulate in the body. So, the treatment aims to slow down the progression of kidney disease into renal failure.
Facts about chronic kidney disease
- The common symptoms during CKD include blood in urine, high blood pressure, and fatigue. Usually, there are no signs in the initial stages.
- Causes include diabetes and high blood pressure
- There is no cure for chronic kidney disease in Allopathy but Ayurveda can help treat CKD
- Diagnosis commonly occurs after blood tests, kidney scans, or biopsy
Symptoms
As opposed to acute kidney failure, CKD develops slowly and progressively. Even if a single kidney stops functioning, the other can carry out its function and compensate for the loss. Until the disease advances to the late stages, signs and symptoms do not become apparent. So, diagnosing and detecting that you have chronic kidney disease is quite tough.
It is important that people who are at the risk of developing kidney disease should go for annual checkup plans. Early detection to CKD is a key to early treatment and better health in a time span.
The most common signs and symptoms of chronic kidney disease include:
- Anemia
- Blood in the urine
- Dark urine
- Decreased mental alertness
- Decreased urine output
- Swollen feet, hands, and ankles
- Fatigue
- Hypertension
- Insomnia
- Itchy skin, can become persistent
- Loss of appetite
- More frequent urination especially at night
- Muscle cramps
- Muscle twitches
- Nausea
- Pain on the side or mid to lower back
- Panting
- Protein in urine
- Sudden change in bodyweight
- Persistent headache
Stages of chronic kidney disease
Chronic kidney disease does not happen all at once rather in stages. The stages of chronic kidney disease are determined based on the glomerular filtration rate, which is a measure of kidney function.
- Stage 1: GFR normal, and is more than 90
- Stage 2: GFR less than 90 millimeters
- Stage 3: The signs of chronic kidney disease appear in the third stage. At this stage, GFR drops to less than 60 millimeters
- Stage 4: GFR being less than 30 is the characteristic of this stage. This is the last stage before the failure.
- Stage 5: It is the stage in which GFR drops to 15 or less and the kidneys have got failed or are at the edge of failure.
Treatment for end stage renal disease
End-stage renal disease or CRF is the last stage of chronic kidney disease. At this stage, no allopathic treatments even dialysis and transplant can fully work for the patients but only Ayurveda.
There are two types of dialysis, hemodialysis, and peritoneal dialysis.
- Hemodialysis: The blood is drained out of the body and passes through a machine called a dialyzer. An individual who is going for hemodialysis needs to have three sessions of dialysis per week with each session taking up to 3 hours.
- Peritoneal dialysis: In this type of dialysis, the blood is filtered in the patient’s abdomen which contains a series of tiny blood vessels. A catheter is placed into the abdomen with the help of a small surgery. The dialysis solution is infused and drained out for the time required to remove waste and excess fluid.
Kidney transplant
A kidney transplant is a surgical approach in which a healthy kidney from the donor (alive or deceased) is placed into the body of the patient. But the recipient and the donor should have the same blood type, proteins, and antibodies to start with the transplant. If the match is not found, the surgery is not performed and the recipient needs to wait until the matched kidney is found. Nonetheless, a patient needs to consume anti-immunosuppressant for the rest of his lives to let the body accept the new organ.
Ayurvedic treatment
Ayurvedic treatment also plays an important role in the betterment of the patient. It consists of ayurvedic medicines made from the rare herbs and spices which act as a natural diuretic for the body. These medicines improve the renal sufficiency, boost filtration capacity, and strengthen the immunity of the patient. Furthermore, the ayurvedic medicines do not pose a threat to the patient in any way.
