Polycystic kidney disease: Types and treatment

Polycystic kidney disease refers to the outer growth filled with blood and waste on the kidneys. It is a genetic condition triggered by the presence of faulty genes in one or both the parents. Depending upon how it is inherited, an individual may have one of the two different types of PKD. However, both types of PKD are equally life-threatening for the complications they bring in life. In severe cases, a patient may not survive the enlarged size of the kidneys and die eventually. So it is important to shrink the size of the cysts with the best treatment approach. There is no treatment for PKD in Allopathy that can reduce the size of the kidneys, but ayurvedic remedies are very helpful at such times. Polycystic kidney disease treatment in Ayurveda should be taken by the patients once they diagnose with kidney cysts.

PKD may also trigger the growth of cysts on the liver and elsewhere in the body. So, ayurvedic remedies focus on changing lifestyle and dietary habits that may prevent the risk of PKD.

The two main types of PKD include Autosomal dominant PKD and Autosomal recessive PKD. Autosomal dominant PKD or ADPKD occurs when the child receives genes from one parent only. In the case of ADPKD, a patient receives either of the PKD1 or PKD2 genes to develop PKD. Most cases of ADPKD however arise with genetic mutations in PKD1 while only 10% cases are known to have PKD 2 gene that may allow cysts to grow on the kidneys. An individual with PKD genes may only witness the signs which appear only after 30 years of age.

The signs in this form of PKD may include cysts in the liver or kidney, infections in the urinary tract, bleeding because of the bursting of the kidneys, severe headaches, high blood pressure, stones in the kidneys, etc. The tissues located around the kidneys may also get stretched causing immense pain to the sufferer. The buildup of waste and fluid in the cells and tissues result in high blood pressure. Of all the signs that may appear with ADPKD, the most common one include visible drops of blood in the urine which is called Hematuria.

The severity of the condition is dependent on an individual’s body and health, but those who have mutations in the PKD1 gene progress more quickly towards kidney failure than those with the PKD2 gene. Consequently, they need PKD treatment in Ayurveda for their survival.

The other form of PKD, called Autosomal recessive PKD occurs when a child receives gene mutations from both the parents. This form of PKD appears early in life or when the baby is not born yet. In cases, if only one parent has the faulty genes, the child will only be the carrier of the gene and not have the disease otherwise.

ARPKD can be diagnosed early in life, so a patient can start with the treatment early. Good prenatal care is important to take care of the baby.

The signs that ADPKD inhibits may include increased size of the kidneys which may put hamper the growth of the other subsiding organs and ultimately led to growth failure. The baby may also have low levels of amniotic fluids when he is in the womb.

The lungs of the baby with ARPKD may not grow well. Often the child may die within hours or days because he cannot breathe well. Also, they have persistent high blood pressure which increases the risk of heart disease and stroke.

PKD treatment in Ayurveda

Patients with PKD who are planning to have babies must take consultation from their ayurvedic specialist before conceiving. By taking polycystic kidney disease treatment in Ayurveda, they can avoid the risk of passing PKD to their babies. This treatment involves only herbal medications and some changes in the diet plan to foster good health.

Using the medicines which are a natural diuretic, anti-oxidants, and anti-inflammatory, the faults in the genes, cells, and tissues are revived. Moreover, following yoga and proper diet will help to channelize energy in the best possible way. The channels of the kidneys will have a proper energy flow after the treatment along with a decline in visible signs.
